Searching for Gold in Reefton

New Zealand ExperiencesBy JennyNovember 17, 2014Leave a comment

Not many people stop in Reefton. At first glance it’s just a blip on the highway, a place you pass through on your way to or from the West Coast, a one-street town with not much going on.   The highway goes right through Reefton. It doesn’t look like much!   Except that’s not true.…

Robbery and Retribution in Oamaru

New Zealand ExperiencesBy JennyNovember 4, 20145 Comments

My bag was stolen in Oamaru.   A street in the Victorian area of Oamaru.   Not recently; this happened back in 2002, when I came to New Zealand for three months before I went to Australia for a year’s working holiday.   When I tell people my bag got stolen in New Zealand usually…

In Wanaka with a cold. Boo.

New Zealand ExperiencesBy JennyOctober 30, 20142 Comments

I’m sick. I mean, not seriously sick, but I’ve had a cold for more than a week and I’m still a coughing, spluttering, phglemy mess of a person. And I’m somewhat miserable, because I’m in Wanaka and it’s beautiful and I thought I’d be out hiking and taking advantage of the multitude of activities available…

El Minya City of the Dead – Zawiyyet al-Mayyiteen Cemetery

EgyptBy JennyOctober 22, 201415 Comments

I look to my right, centre, left. Mud domes, hundreds, maybe thousands of them, stretching off just about as far as I can see into the desert haze. This is the incredible Zawiyyet Al Mayyiteen, the City of the Dead, a massive cemetery just outside El Minya, Egypt.

5 Things I’ve Learned While House Sitting on the Banks Peninsula

House sitting, New Zealand ExperiencesBy JennyOctober 13, 20144 Comments

It seems like just last week that I arrived on the Banks Peninsula, stunned by the natural beauty of this place and completely overwhelmed by all the things to do!   But alas, it has been more than six weeks now, and sadly, the time has come for my departure. I’ve gotten to know the fantastic…

Bifengxia: Visiting the ‘other’ Panda research base in Sichuan province

ChinaBy JennySeptember 30, 20142 Comments

I have a friend who hates giant pandas. And I don’t mean she just kinda dislikes them; no, she actively HATES them.   But how could anyone hate this gorgeous face?       It’s something to do with pandas being an evolutionary dead end, useless creatures that can only subsist on an extremely limited…

My top 5 destinations I’d like to revisit

Czech Republic, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar/Burma, New Zealand Experiences, Travel Musings, VietnamBy JennySeptember 21, 20142 Comments

When I’m trying to choose where to travel to next, I don’t often pick somewhere that I’ve already been. There are so many places to explore, my list keeps getting longer and longer, so with such little time and money, going back to a destination seems like a waste. Why not spend that time and…

Canyoning in Dalat: the scariest day of my life

VietnamBy JennySeptember 15, 20142 Comments

“Oh crap crap crap crap crap….” was going through my head as I lost my footing and swung into the water pouring over the cliff face. I was dangling 20 metres above the river, with water relentlessly pounding down on my head from above. “Must…get…out…of…water……..need…to…breathe!”   And that is why it was the scariest day…

Surrounded by spirituality: a trip to the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa, Tibet

TibetBy JennySeptember 8, 2014Leave a comment

I’ve put off writing about Tibet for a long time, mostly because I quite simply did not know where to begin. It was an intense time; the anticipation building from my first arrival in Chengdu a full week before our departure, and then two weeks of dealing with the emotional highs and lows that come…

How you end up house sitting on the Banks peninsula

House sitting, New Zealand ExperiencesBy JennyAugust 29, 20144 Comments

Sometimes you make a plan. You consider every detail carefully, you dedicate time to researching and investigating all your options, contacting the right people and arranging everything just so. I'm Jenny, and I'm a nomad. I believe in seeing the world slowly, taking my time and soaking up the atmosphere. In the past 15 years I've lived in South Korea, Scotland, Vietnam, New Zealand, and Oman and have traveled a lot around and between those places. Not only do I have thoughts and stories to share, but my memory is increasingly bad, so I've started this blog to help me remember and to tell the world about my travel experiences. Read more >>>

A Socotra sunrise.... It's crazy to think this wa A Socotra sunrise....

It's crazy to think this was already almost a year ago!

And that I wasn't even sure I should spend the money on it, knowing that I was about to quit my job and live off my savings for a while. 😬

But I went and it was amazing, worth every penny!

Have you been to Socotra?

Are you a winter lover or hater? After so long li Are you a winter lover or hater?

After so long living in Oman, where winter was the best season, this was the first year in a long time that I was really not looking forward to it! And mostly, Danish winter has lived up to my expectations: grey, dreary, dark and rainy days. But this snow a couple of weeks ago was the first I'd seen in a long, LONG time, and even I will admit that when the sun came out, it was glorious. That bit of fog crossing my path was just the icing on the cake.

Hands up 🙋 if you love winter!

I found this one on a morning wander around Trogir, Croatia, where I recently stayed for a month. This cat was not impressed to have me standing there taking pictures of it, but I guess that seat was just too comfy to move!

Why is Greenland called Greenland when it's mostly Why is Greenland called Greenland when it's mostly covered in ice?

It's all thanks to the Vikings. Exiled from Iceland around the year 982, Erik the Red spent three years exploring the southern coasts of Greenland, which is mostly ice-free and, well, green! He saw opportunity here, and when he went back to Iceland he told people about this place, calling it 'Greenland' to entice them to come settle.

It worked, and in the year 985, 25 ships left Iceland for Greenland. Only 14 arrived, but those settlers spread themselves all over South Greenland.

Erik built himself an estate here in Brattahlíð (present-day Qassiarsuk), where you can still see ruins of Viking buildings, and this reconstruction of a small chapel and a Viking longhouse.

Drop an emoji in the comments if you'd like to check out some Viking ruins!

Where have you seen beautiful fall colours recently?
