Practicalities in Cuba: Queueing, Money, and Internet

CubaBy JennyMarch 1, 20166 Comments

The first few days I was in Cuba I spent not just sightseeing, but also just learning the ropes, the basic knowledge needed for traveling in this country. The things that are normally quite easy when we’re abroad, like simply getting money or connecting to wifi, are just not that simple in Cuba. So here’s your ultimate guide to the practicalities in Cuba.

Laguna Guanaroca, Cuba: Birdwatching at its Best in Cienfuegos

CubaBy JennyFebruary 24, 20162 Comments

The soft morning light was perfect, the lagoon still and quiet, and the calmness enveloped me, the only sounds those of the occasional bird calling and the oars gently splashing in the water. As we got nearer, the flamingoes started to move. In perfect sync they all put their heads in the air and started walking in the same direction, an army of long pink necks marching away from us.

Snorkeling with Green Sea Turtles at Akumal Beach, Mexico

MexicoBy JennyFebruary 21, 2016Leave a comment

Turtles are my second favourite animal and though I’ve previously encountered them while snorkeling they’ve always been shy and have retreated into the distance at the first sight of me. At Akumal they were unconcerned by my presence, happily munching on the plentiful sea grass on the ocean floor, just 50 metres out from the shoreline.

White Island: Who Wants to Hike on an Active Volcano?

New Zealand ExperiencesBy JennyFebruary 17, 2016Leave a comment

“If there’s an eruption”, the guide said, “stay calm, and stay with your group. We’ll head back to the boat and get you off the island as soon as it’s safe to do so.” I looked around me at the clouds of steam billowing out of the crater, and wondered just how long might it be before it was ‘safe to do so’ in the midst of a volcanic eruption?

Harassment in Cuba, Part Three: They’re Following Me

CubaBy JennyFebruary 9, 201612 Comments

I experienced so much Harassment in Cuba, I had to write three whole posts about it! In this final instalment, strange men follow me numerous times and I get chased down in the street by a man who wants to ‘help’. Then a nice man turns very creepy in a cave and I almost cause a fight!

Harassment in Cuba, Part Two: Catcalls and Conversations

CubaBy JennyFebruary 4, 201614 Comments

For me, Cuba was full of stories of harassment. Sometimes it was the ‘normal’ harmless but extremely annoying sexual harassment, other times it was more serious, with men insisting that they MUST talk to me, and not taking no for an answer. There was so much, it nearly sent me to a breaking point.

Harassment in Cuba, Part One: Liuvin

CubaBy JennyFebruary 2, 201610 Comments

When people rave about Cuba, the one thing they don’t tell you is that there is an exceptional amount of harassment, especially if you’re a solo female. I often felt like I was walking around with a giant target painted on my forehead. In this first of a 3-part series, I’m here to tell you what you can expect.

Where to Find Good Food in Cuba

CubaBy JennyJanuary 28, 20164 Comments

By the time I’d been in Cuba for a couple of weeks, I’d had enough of the food. Too often I ate meals that were bland and overcooked, not to mention overpriced for what I was getting! So here, to save you the same difficulties, I am giving you my recommendations for where to eat in Cuba!

I'm Jenny, and I'm a nomad. I believe in seeing the world slowly, taking my time and soaking up the atmosphere. In the past 15 years I've lived in South Korea, Scotland, Vietnam, New Zealand, and Oman and have traveled a lot around and between those places. Not only do I have thoughts and stories to share, but my memory is increasingly bad, so I've started this blog to help me remember and to tell the world about my travel experiences. Read more >>>

It's crazy to think this was already almost a year ago!

And that I wasn't even sure I should spend the money on it, knowing that I was about to quit my job and live off my savings for a while. 😬

But I went and it was amazing, worth every penny!

Have you been to Socotra?

Are you a winter lover or hater? After so long li Are you a winter lover or hater?

After so long living in Oman, where winter was the best season, this was the first year in a long time that I was really not looking forward to it! And mostly, Danish winter has lived up to my expectations: grey, dreary, dark and rainy days. But this snow a couple of weeks ago was the first I'd seen in a long, LONG time, and even I will admit that when the sun came out, it was glorious. That bit of fog crossing my path was just the icing on the cake.

Hands up 🙋 if you love winter!

I found this one on a morning wander around Trogir, Croatia, where I recently stayed for a month. This cat was not impressed to have me standing there taking pictures of it, but I guess that seat was just too comfy to move!

What interesting spot have you seen cats sleeping in? 🐱

Why is Greenland called Greenland when it's mostly Why is Greenland called Greenland when it's mostly covered in ice?

It's all thanks to the Vikings. Exiled from Iceland around the year 982, Erik the Red spent three years exploring the southern coasts of Greenland, which is mostly ice-free and, well, green! He saw opportunity here, and when he went back to Iceland he told people about this place, calling it 'Greenland' to entice them to come settle.

It worked, and in the year 985, 25 ships left Iceland for Greenland. Only 14 arrived, but those settlers spread themselves all over South Greenland.

Erik built himself an estate here in Brattahlíð (present-day Qassiarsuk), where you can still see ruins of Viking buildings, and this reconstruction of a small chapel and a Viking longhouse.

Drop an emoji in the comments if you'd like to check out some Viking ruins!

I'm hanging out in Croatia for a bit and was lucky I'm hanging out in Croatia for a bit and was lucky enough to spend a couple of days at Plitvice Lakes. It was around the beginning of October, so the fall colours were just starting and the sunny days made it stunning! 🍂 I could have spent a week of those quiet early mornings wandering around the park.

Where have you seen beautiful fall colours recently?
