Becoming a monk: a Burmese rite of passage

Myanmar/BurmaBy JennyMarch 11, 2014

‘Come, come!’ the man urged me as he handed me the razor. The boy cringed as I gently touched it to his already-bleeding scalp. I carefully scraped away a few tiny bits of hair and tried to smile prettily for the camera.   It was my very first day in Burma (on this trip, anyway)…

Burma: Why I need to go AGAIN.

Myanmar/BurmaBy JennyMarch 2, 20149 Comments

I’m about to head back to Burma for the third time. You might ask ‘WHY? If you’ve been there twice, do you really need to go back AGAIN?’ The answer is yes. Yes I do. Because I LOVE this country.   Shwedagon Paya in Yangon.   I first visited Burma in 2008. I’d been told…

Counting countries: how, why, and should you?

Britain, China, Destinations, Travel MusingsBy JennyFebruary 18, 20149 Comments

One question us travelers get asked a lot is “How many countries have you been to?” The problem is, I don’t know how to answer that question.   Ok, so for me, depending on how I count, it could be anywhere between 33 and 43. (Yes, I actually wrote them all down and counted them…

Not really a woman….but not a man either?

Travel Musings, VietnamBy JennyFebruary 15, 2014Leave a comment

“Mot, Hai, Ba, YO!” we all shouted as we clinked our tiny glasses together and downed another shot of rice wine.  I fought back my grimace and put on a polite smile as my glass was refilled yet again.   ‘Jenny’, Ha leaned over and whispered, ‘you’re a woman, so it’s really ok if you…

Tamarind Laos Cooking Class – Market Tour

LaosBy JennySeptember 30, 20131 Comment

Vietnam’s National Day is September 2nd, which is the day in 1945 when the Japanese surrendered after occupying the country during the Second World War. The previous French occupiers were still around but while they weren’t looking, here in Hanoi “Uncle” Ho Chi Minh gave a speech in Ba Dinh Square declaring Vietnam an independent…

Phu Quoc Island: a Vietnamese beach escape

VietnamBy JennyMarch 31, 20122 Comments

During my time in Vietnam I occasionally had a “down week”, which is the week we had between terms when there are no classes. At one point it had been quite a while since I’d had a beach holiday and I was tired and burnt out and needed to relax, so I booked myself a…

My profile pic

I'm Jenny, and I'm a nomad. I believe in seeing the world slowly, taking my time and soaking up the atmosphere. In the past 15 years I've lived in South Korea, Scotland, Vietnam, New Zealand, and Oman and have traveled a lot around and between those places. Not only do I have thoughts and stories to share, but my memory is increasingly bad, so I've started this blog to help me remember and to tell the world about my travel experiences. Read more >>>

A Socotra sunrise.... It's crazy to think this wa A Socotra sunrise....

It's crazy to think this was already almost a year ago!

And that I wasn't even sure I should spend the money on it, knowing that I was about to quit my job and live off my savings for a while. 😬

But I went and it was amazing, worth every penny!

Have you been to Socotra?

Are you a winter lover or hater? After so long li Are you a winter lover or hater?

After so long living in Oman, where winter was the best season, this was the first year in a long time that I was really not looking forward to it! And mostly, Danish winter has lived up to my expectations: grey, dreary, dark and rainy days. But this snow a couple of weeks ago was the first I'd seen in a long, LONG time, and even I will admit that when the sun came out, it was glorious. That bit of fog crossing my path was just the icing on the cake.

Hands up 🙋 if you love winter!

Where else are you gonna sleep if you're a Croatia Where else are you gonna sleep if you're a Croatian cat? 😂

I found this one on a morning wander around Trogir, Croatia, where I recently stayed for a month. This cat was not impressed to have me standing there taking pictures of it, but I guess that seat was just too comfy to move!

What interesting spot have you seen cats sleeping in? 🐱

Why is Greenland called Greenland when it's mostly Why is Greenland called Greenland when it's mostly covered in ice?

It's all thanks to the Vikings. Exiled from Iceland around the year 982, Erik the Red spent three years exploring the southern coasts of Greenland, which is mostly ice-free and, well, green! He saw opportunity here, and when he went back to Iceland he told people about this place, calling it 'Greenland' to entice them to come settle.

It worked, and in the year 985, 25 ships left Iceland for Greenland. Only 14 arrived, but those settlers spread themselves all over South Greenland.

Erik built himself an estate here in Brattahlíð (present-day Qassiarsuk), where you can still see ruins of Viking buildings, and this reconstruction of a small chapel and a Viking longhouse.

Drop an emoji in the comments if you'd like to check out some Viking ruins!

I'm hanging out in Croatia for a bit and was lucky I'm hanging out in Croatia for a bit and was lucky enough to spend a couple of days at Plitvice Lakes. It was around the beginning of October, so the fall colours were just starting and the sunny days made it stunning! 🍂 I could have spent a week of those quiet early mornings wandering around the park.

Where have you seen beautiful fall colours recently?
