Yeah, me too. There had been a big storm the day before but the day I went there was barely a cloud in the sky. And despite chatting to people along the way, I never found out how the people actually died. But it was a beautiful walk through the tea fields and I met lots of friendly locals! It's really where life takes place...locals out doing their shopping, and vendors doing their best to lure you in! I wasn't going to buy anything at this market in Jaipur, India, (I think my backpack was already full 🤣) but the salesmen were friendly and oh, the colours! SO. MANY. COLOURS. When I travel, I like to check out places that nob When I travel, I like to check out places that nobody else thinks to go to. One of these was the Bamboo Sea in Sichuan, China. Although when I say that nobody else thinks to go there, I mean mainly foreign tourists. The place was crawling with domestic tourists. But that means that information is hard to find and English is just about non-existent. Challenging? Oh hell yes. But rewarding? Absolutely. I got there by bus, which dropped us off in a parking lot in the middle of nowhere, from which we had to continue by car. I didn't know this in advance. Thanks to the kindness of strangers, I ended up in a car with a bunch of others who all knew where they were going. I, however, did not. None of them really spoke any English. They tried to help me and I ended up getting dropped off at a hotel that was kind of far from everything. So I dropped my stuff and started walking, only to be picked up minutes later by a curious couple, who took me to a main area with facilities. From there I could find transport and options to explore. And a new hotel that wasn't so far from everything! The Bamboo Sea is a beautiful spot but the parts I mostly remember are about how hard it was and the kind people who helped me along the way (including inviting me to join them for a meal!), even though we didn't share any language in common. I've heard people say that Chinese people are rude, but push yourself to get out of the cities and you'll find some of the friendliest and kindest people you could ever meet. #SichuanChina #BambooSea #OffTheBeatenPath #ChinaTravel #TravelStories
Have you ever had a travel experience where there’ Have you ever had a travel experience where there’s a distinct language barrier, but it just doesn’t matter AT ALL? On a visit to Pahtaw Island off the coast of Myeik in southern Myanmar, Ta Pay Oo befriended me while I was visiting a temple. He came along while I explored the island, chattering away in his language while I chattered back at him in English, and the language barrier didn't matter to us one bit. He held my umbrella to shelter me from the sun and showed me the local village, including a cafe where all the kids were gathered to watch TV! At a shady stop at another temple there was a group of teenagers that were pretty curious about me. But they eventually went back to their own discussions, except a girl called Ee Myo who also decided to join us. Ee Myo and Ta Pay Oo showed me around the rest of their island, all the way to the giant reclining Buddha at the southern end. We talked, we laughed, we got a bit silly and took some pictures, until they finally found me a boat to take me back to the mainland and made sure I got on it safely. We had not one word in common, but somehow we communicated just fine anyway. The afternoon I spent with the two of them will always stick in my mind as a highlight of all my travels. It's amazing how such a small, chance encounter can turn out to be such a wonderful memory. THIS is why I travel.
